Taksim is where Istanbul stays awake, and getting there from Istanbul Airport (IST) should be the easiest part of your trip. Taksim lies roughly 40 kilometres south-east of Istanbul Airport, and in a private vehicle the journey takes about 35 to 45 minutes in normal conditions. Your chauffeur usually leaves the terminal on the airport motorway and follows the O-7 connection toward the city, then approaches Taksim through Kağıthane or along the Basın Ekspres corridor depending on live traffic. Evening rush hour on the approach roads can stretch the drive toward an hour, while arrivals after 22:00 or before 07:00 frequently reach the square in barely half an hour. The last kilometre matters most in this district: the one-way lanes of Talimhane, the hotel streets of Gümüşsuyu and the slopes down to Cihangir and Galata all require a driver who knows exactly which corner to take, and ours do this route every day. Taksim is the modern centre of gravity of Istanbul.
