Distance, Route and Timing from EDO

Meet Seyit Onbaşı: Why the Airport Carries This Name

Visitors are sometimes surprised the airport is not simply called "Edremit Airport." It is named after Seyit Onbaşı (Corporal Seyit), born Seyit Ali Çabuk in the nearby district of Havran. During the Gallipoli campaign, on 18 March 1915, he served as an artillery gunner at the Rumeli Mecidiye battery. When the shell hoist mechanism broke down mid-battle, he is remembered for carrying an artillery shell, recorded historically at 276 kg though some accounts put the true weight closer to 215 kg, on his back to keep the guns firing on the Allied fleet. The terminal opened in 1997 and took his name after a major renovation completed in 2010, a detail that gives locals visible pride whenever they fly in or out of their own region's airport.

Choosing Your Base on the Edremit Gulf

Akçay is the Gulf's most animated seaside town, known for the cold artesian springs that bubble up right at the shoreline and for a long, shallow beach that suits families with children. Its seafront promenade of shops and summer houses makes it the first stop for many guests landing at EDO. West of the airport, Küçükkuyu anchors Turkey's olive-oil producing heartland, with the stone villages of Adatepe and Yeşilyurt nearby, while the ancient hilltop settlement of Assos (Behramkale), a little further on, rewards the extra driving time with one of the Aegean's best-preserved classical sites and a working fishing harbour below the cliffs.

Practical Tips for Arriving at Koca Seyit Airport

• Domestic check-in: arrive at the terminal at least 2 hours before your return flight; the small terminal processes passengers quickly.
• International check-in (Düsseldorf route): allow at least 3 hours for passport and customs control.
• No duty-free shop: the terminal has no duty-free store, so plan any duty-free shopping elsewhere; it does have an ATM, a baby-care room, a luggage storage desk and cafes.
• Best time to visit: the swimming season runs from mid-June to the end of September, with July and August the busiest; September and October offer a calmer holiday while the sea is still warm.
