Ortaköy Mosque

Year Built 1853
Architect Nigoğos Balyan
Style Neo-Baroque
Entrance Free

When people think of Istanbul's skyline, one of the first images that comes to mind is the elegant Ortaköy Mosque rising gracefully with the colossal Bosphorus Bridge (15 July Martyrs Bridge) in the background. Officially named the Grand Mecidiye Mosque, this masterpiece is a must-see for every visitor.

A Floating Elegance on Water

Commissioned by Sultan Abdülmecid and designed by Nigoğos Balyan (from the famous Balyan family of architects), the mosque is built on a pier extending into the sea. This unique positioning creates an illusion that the structure is floating on the Bosphorus waters.

Did You Know?

The large windows of the mosque were designed specifically to let the changing light of the Bosphorus inside. The reflection of the sun off the water dances on the mosque's dome, creating a unique visual feast for those praying or visiting inside.

Interior & Architectural Details

The interior is as breathtaking as the exterior. The curved lines of the Baroque style, pink mosaics, and the calligraphy plates written by Sultan Abdülmecid himself (who was also a calligrapher) are striking. Its two slender minarets stretch towards the sky with elegant stone craftsmanship.

Best Photo Spots

1. The Pier Square

From the square right in front of the mosque. Best at sunset when the bridge lights turn on.

2. Bosphorus Boat Tour

Capturing the mosque and the bridge in a single frame from the water offers the best perspective.

The "Kumpir" Ritual

A trip to Ortaköy isn't complete without trying the famous Kumpir (Stuffed Baked Potato). Just behind the mosque, you'll find a street lined with vendors selling giant potatoes filled with cheese, butter, and your choice of endless toppings. Grabbing one and eating it by the sea is a true Istanbul ritual.

Turn Traffic Stress into Comfort

Ortaköy is notorious for its heavy traffic, especially on weekends. Finding a taxi or parking spot is nearly impossible for tourists.
