HAGIA IRENE
Istanbul's first cathedral. The silent sibling of Hagia Sophia. An epic journey from an armory in the shadow of swords to the heart of music, never converted into a mosque.
Hagia Irene: A 17-Century Journey in the Labyrinth of Holy Peace
Competing with the magnificence of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul’s skyline, and shining like a jewel in the first courtyard of Topkapi Palace, Hagia Irene is one of the oldest religious structures in the city. Its name in Greek means "Holy Peace." Having witnessed fires, earthquakes, and wars in its thousands of years of history, this structure is the only masterpiece that preserves the original Byzantine atrium layout.
Architectural Archaeology and Structural Evolution
Built by Emperor Constantine I at the beginning of the 4th century on the ruins of an ancient temple of Zeus, the structure was the main patriarchal church of the city until Hagia Sophia was completed. Destroyed by the Nika Riots in 532, the sanctuary was rebuilt by Emperor Justinian.
The most unique feature of Hagia Irene is that it is the only structure among the churches in Istanbul whose atrium (entrance courtyard) has reached the present day in its original form. This courtyard is the most vivid example of the ancient Roman basilica layout today.
Ottoman Period & Armory
The structure, which was not converted into a mosque after the conquest in 1453, was used as a weapons depot (Armory/Cebehane) for the Janissaries due to its location in Topkapi Palace.
Imperial Museum
With the works collected by Damat Fethi Ahmet Pasha in the 19th century, Hagia Irene became the first address of museology in Turkey.
The Physics of Acoustics and Artistic Power
Hagia Irene is today one of the concert halls with the best natural acoustics in the world. The dome design and stone masonry technique of the building have the feature of reflecting the sound with its purity from 1500 years ago without damping it. Hosting events such as the prestigious IKSV Istanbul Music Festival is a result of this "acoustic engineering."

Visual Symbolism: The Great Cross in the Apse
The large black cross in the apse section, a rare work from the Iconoclasm period, is the most mysterious part of Hagia Irene. While depictions and mosaics are at the forefront in other Byzantine structures, simplicity and symbolism prevail here. This cross is the purest symbol of peace offered by this silent witness of 17 centuries.
