Galata Tower: Istanbul's Eye in the Sky

When looking at Istanbul's silhouette, it is impossible to miss that noble structure with its conical hat looking down gently upon the city. Although Galata Tower has served as a fire watchtower, a dungeon, and an observatory over the centuries, today it welcomes visitors as one of the most romantic and panoramic spots in the city.

A Legacy from Genoese to Present

When it was built by the Genoese in 1348, they named it "Christea Turris" (Tower of Christ). At that time, it was the highest point of the Galata walls. In the Ottoman period, the tower was transformed into a fire watchtower for the safety of the city.

This stubborn structure, which burned down multiple times and had its cone blown off in storms throughout history, was reborn from its ashes in every restoration. With the latest major restoration, it now serves with a modern museology approach, reflecting the history of Istanbul on its walls with digital exhibitions.

The Wings of Hezarfen Ahmet Celebi

Who doesn't know that famous event that took place in the 17th century and was recorded in Evliya Celebi's travelogue? Hezarfen Ahmet Celebi put on his eagle wings that he designed himself and let himself go into the void from the top of the Galata Tower.

A Historic Flight: Taking the power of the wind behind him, Hezarfen managed to cross the Bosphorus and land at Dogancilar Square in Uskudar. This event is considered one of the first intercontinental flight attempts in the history of world aviation.

The Love of Galata & Maiden's Tower

According to Istanbul's most romantic legend, Galata Tower and the Maiden's Tower (in the middle of the Bosphorus) are in love with each other, but the sea between them prevents them from reuniting. When Hezarfen Ahmet Celebi went up to the tower to fly, Galata Tower whispered the letters it had accumulated for centuries into Hezarfen's ear and entrusted them to him.

It is said that when Hezarfen delivered the letters to the Maiden's Tower, these two lovers became sure of their feelings for each other and remained standing by defying the centuries thanks to this love.

Best Photo Angles & Times

Photographing the tower is as enjoyable as climbing it. Framing the tower through Büyük Hendek Street is a classic Istanbul shot. However, for the best light, you should prefer the sunset hours we call the "Golden Hour".
