Adile Sultan Pavilion:
Home of the Legendary 'Chaos Class'

6 min read

Hidden among the lush greenery of Validebağ Grove on Istanbul's Asian side lies a hidden gem: The Adile Sultan Pavilion. This structure is not only a masterpiece of Ottoman architecture but also a shrine for Turkish cinema lovers, serving as the set for the unforgettable movie series "Hababam Sınıfı" (The Chaos Class).

Adile Sultan Pavilion Exterior

History and Significance

Built in 1853 by Sultan Abdülaziz for his beloved sister Adile Sultan, this pavilion was originally designed as a hunting lodge. However, its real fame began in the 1970s when it became the filming location for Rıfat Ilgaz's masterpiece, Hababam Sınıfı.

After serving as a school and a preventorium for many years, the building now welcomes visitors partly as a teacher's lodge and partly as the Hababam Sınıfı Museum.

DON'T MIX THEM UP

Adile Sultan Palace vs. Pavilion

There are two "Adile Sultan" structures in Istanbul, often confused by tourists:

  • Adile Sultan PAVILION (Kasır): Located in Validebağ (Uskudar). This is where the Museum is.
  • Adile Sultan PALACE (Saray): Located in Kandilli (Bosphorus shore). Used for weddings and events, not a museum.

What to See Inside the Museum?

As you climb the stairs, you might feel like you're stepping into a classic Turkish film. The museum room preserves the nostalgia of the 70s perfectly:

  • Wax Statues: Lifelike figures of iconic characters like "Inek Shaban" (Kemal Sunal), Hafize Ana, and the disciplinarian Mahmut Hoca.
  • The Classroom: The original blackboard, stove, and desks used in the movies are preserved exactly as they were.
  • Original Posters: Vintage movie posters and behind-the-scenes photographs from the golden era of Turkish cinema.
