Çardak Airport is operated by DHMI, the Turkish State Airports Authority, and has served civilian traffic since 1991, with a new terminal building added in 2008. It is a single-runway, single-terminal regional airport of around 16,900 square metres, handling roughly 2.2 million passengers a year at capacity, mostly on domestic routes connected through Istanbul, with seasonal international charter flights during the tourist season. According to 2024 DHMI figures, the airport handled about 453,000 passengers in total, split between roughly 405,000 domestic and 48,000 international travellers, a volume driven in large part by Pamukkale tourism. The terminal offers standard passenger facilities, including wheelchair access, ramps and adapted restrooms, flight information screens and free Wi-Fi, with security and passenger processing run around the clock to DHMI standards.
Why Pamukkale and Hierapolis Matter
The travertines at Pamukkale, whose name means "cotton castle" in Turkish, were formed over thousands of years as calcium-rich thermal water flowed down the hillside and deposited mineral terraces, creating a landscape unlike almost anywhere else on earth. The thermal springs that built them are still active, and several pools remain open for bathing today. Directly above the travertines sit the ruins of Hierapolis, a Greco-Roman spa city founded in the 2nd century BC, with a well-preserved ancient theatre, a monumental necropolis considered one of the largest in Asia Minor, and the Martyrium of Saint Philip, an important site of early Christian pilgrimage. A short distance away, Karahayit is known for its own iron-rich red thermal springs and has grown into a hotel district built specifically around thermal tourism, popular with guests who want direct access to a thermal pool at their own hotel rather than a day visit to Pamukkale.
