Central Marmaris is a lively holiday town built into a bay at the mouth of the Gulf of Gokova, ringed by pine forest and known for both its beach life by day and its nightlife after dark. Getting there from Dalaman Airport (DLM) means the D400 highway, which follows the Gokova coastline and crosses the Sakar Pass. This roughly 90-95 kilometre route takes our VIP vehicles between about 1 hour 15 minutes and 1 hour 30 minutes depending on traffic. Known in antiquity as Physcus, Marmaris is a port town where Suleiman the Magnificent gathered his fleet in 1522 before the campaign against Rhodes. Marmaris Castle, the city's landmark, can now be visited as a museum and sits on the hill overlooking the harbour, just above the old bazaar. The Grand Bazaar, in the narrow streets around the castle, is a traditional shopping district known for leather goods, local crafts and spices.

The liveliest part of town is the seafront running parallel to the marina and the entertainment strip known as Bar Street, where restaurants, cafes and nightclubs stay open late. Netsel Marina, one of Turkey's leading yacht harbours, is a major departure point for Blue Cruise routes and gulet charters; daily boat tours setting off from around the marina typically follow routes covering the nearby bays and beaches.

Uzunyali, west of town, is where the resort hotels and boutique accommodation cluster along a kilometres-long beach promenade lined with palm trees, popular with guests who like to walk or cycle into the town centre in the evening. Just south of Marmaris, the bays of Turunç and İçmeler offer a calmer holiday atmosphere as alternative places to stay.

Some guests staying in central Marmaris like to set aside a day of their holiday for the natural sights nearby. Dalyan's mud baths, Iztuzu Beach and the rock tombs at the ancient city of Kaunos can all be planned as a day trip by road or by boat. The road out to the Datça peninsula makes for another day-trip route for nature and history lovers alike. Demand in Marmaris rises noticeably in season, especially in July and August, so we recommend booking early during this period.

Unlike quieter boutique towns such as Kalkan and Kaş, Marmaris offers a mix that welcomes both families and groups, blending daytime beach life with nightlife after dark.
